Storm damage & insurance claims
On the Gulf Coast, most roofs are replaced because of wind and hail — not old age. Here's how damage and claims actually work.
How do I know if my roof has storm or hail damage?
A lot of storm damage isn't visible from the ground. Hail leaves bruises and knocks the protective granules off the shingle; wind creases and lifts shingles and tears at flashing. The tells you can sometimes spot are granules collecting in gutters and downspouts, dented gutters or vents, and shingle pieces in the yard after a storm. The only way to know for sure is to get on the roof — which is exactly what our free inspection is for.
Should I file an insurance claim, and will it raise my rates?
If a storm genuinely damaged your roof, that's what your policy is for. We'll get on the roof first and tell you honestly whether the damage is real and claim-worthy — we won't talk you into filing over normal wear, because a denied claim helps no one. Storm claims are typically weather-related events, which most carriers treat differently than a claim you caused; we can't set your rates, but we can make sure a legitimate claim is documented properly.
What do I actually pay if my claim is approved?
On an approved storm claim, your out-of-pocket cost is your deductible. Insurance covers the approved scope of the roof replacement, you pay your deductible, and we build to that scope. Be very cautious of any contractor who offers to 'waive' or 'eat' your deductible — in Texas that's insurance fraud, and it's a hallmark of the storm-chaser crews we compete against.
Will you meet my insurance adjuster?
Yes, and we recommend it. We meet your adjuster on the roof so legitimate storm damage isn't missed or undervalued. We speak the same language they do, we bring the photo documentation, and we handle the scope and any supplements — so you end up with the roof your policy actually owes you.
A storm just hit and my roof is leaking — can you come now?
Call us. For active leaks after a storm we get out fast to tarp the roof and stop water from getting into your home while the claim is sorted out. Emergency tarping protects your interior; the full restoration follows once we've documented everything.
A crew knocked on my door after the last storm. Should I use them?
Be careful. After every big Houston storm, out-of-town 'storm chaser' crews flood the neighborhoods, sign as many roofs as they can, subcontract the work to whoever's cheapest, and leave the state before any warranty problem shows up. We're a local, family-owned company that's been here 18+ years and installs with our own crews — we'll still be in Houston to answer the phone in ten years.
Roof systems, materials & colors
Asphalt shingle for homes, single-ply systems for flat and commercial roofs — the right roof depends on your building, your budget, and how long you plan to stay. Here's the honest rundown.
What roofing systems do you install?
For homes, we install complete architectural asphalt shingle systems — the sweet spot for Houston: strong wind and impact ratings, dozens of colors, and the best value per year of life. For flat and low-slope commercial buildings, we install TPO, modified-bitumen, and coating systems engineered for standing water. We'll walk your roof and recommend what actually fits — not just the most expensive option.
What brands of shingles do you install?
We install premium systems from GAF (Timberline HDZ) and Owens Corning (Duration with SureNail), and CertainTeed on request. These are architectural shingles with high wind and impact ratings built for Gulf-Coast weather — not the thin builder-grade three-tabs. Our supplier is ABC Supply, a national distributor, so we're never scrambling for materials.
Why do you say the system matters more than the shingle?
Because it does. A great shingle nailed over rotten decking, old felt, and bad flashing will still leak. What actually keeps water out and makes the warranty hold is the whole system underneath: solid decking, synthetic underlayment, ice-and-water shield in the valleys, proper flashing and drip edge, and balanced attic ventilation. We build the system right, then put a premium shingle on top.
How long should a new roof last in Houston?
A properly installed architectural shingle roof generally lasts 25–30 years, though Houston's heat, humidity, and storms can shorten that if the attic isn't ventilated well. Ventilation is the quiet factor — an under-vented attic bakes shingles from below and ages a roof early, which is why we treat it as part of the system.
What color options do I have?
Plenty. Architectural shingles come in a wide range — cool weathered grays, near-blacks, warm browns and reds, and blended tones to match brick and stone. We'll bring real swatches and hold them against your actual siding and brick, because a color reads very differently on a sample board than it does across a whole roof in the Houston sun.
Does roof color affect how hot my house gets?
Somewhat. Lighter and 'cool'-rated shingles reflect more sunlight and can help keep an attic cooler, which matters on west- and south-facing slopes here. But balanced attic ventilation makes a bigger difference than color alone. We'll factor both into what we recommend.
Knowing when — and whether — to replace
Not sure if you need a new roof? These are the questions we hear most before a project even starts.
How do I know it's time for a new roof?
Common signs are shingles that are curling, cracking, or missing; bald spots where the granules have worn off; daylight or water stains in the attic; sagging areas; and a roof that's simply near the end of its rated life. After a hail or wind storm, damage can be sudden even on a newer roof. When you're not sure, a free inspection settles it fast.
Do I need a full replacement, or can you just repair it?
Depends on the roof. A missing shingle, a cracked pipe boot, or failed flashing around a chimney can often be repaired for a fraction of a replacement — if the rest of the roof has life left. If the roof is worn out across the whole field or the storm damage is widespread, a repair is just throwing good money after bad. We'll tell you honestly which one you're looking at, and we'll do the repair when the repair is the right call.
What happens during a free roof inspection?
We actually get on the roof — this isn't a glance from the driveway. We check the shingles, flashing, pipe boots, valleys, and attic ventilation up close, photograph everything we find, and give you a straight recommendation: repair, replace, or you're fine for now. You keep the photos whether or not you ever hire us.
I'm buying or selling a home — can you inspect the roof?
Yes, and it's one of the most common reasons people call us. We'll give you an honest read on the roof's condition and remaining life, with photos you can hand to a buyer, seller, or agent. No pressure and no invented problems — just what we'd want to know if it were our own home.
Warranty & coverage
Every roof is backed on two fronts — the materials and the installation. Full details are on our Warranty page.
What warranty comes with my new roof?
Two layers. The manufacturer warranty covers the roofing materials — GAF offers material warranties up to 50 years — and our Bluebonnet workmanship warranty covers the installation itself. Together they cover both the product and the work, so nothing falls through the crack between 'the shingle' and 'how it was installed.'
What is a GAF System Plus warranty, and how do I get it?
GAF offers enhanced coverage — including stronger labor protection — when a roof is installed as a complete GAF system, not just GAF shingles over generic parts. Because we build the full system (underlayment, starter, ridge cap, and ventilation), your roof can qualify for that enhanced coverage instead of basic shingle-only terms. We'll confirm what your specific roof qualifies for at the estimate.
Is my roof warranty transferable if I sell the house?
Manufacturer roofing warranties are generally transferable to the next homeowner, usually within a set window after the sale — a real plus for resale value. The exact terms depend on the warranty tier your roof qualifies for, and we'll give you the documentation to pass along.
What if my roof leaks after you install it?
You call us, directly. A leak traced to our installation is covered under our workmanship warranty and we fix it — there's no call center between you and the people who built your roof. We're local and we're not going anywhere, which is the whole point of hiring a company that's been in Houston 18+ years instead of a crew passing through.
Is insurance-claim work built to the same standard?
Yes. On an insurance restoration we build the roof back to current code, not just back to whatever was there before — and it carries the same manufacturer and workmanship coverage as any other roof we install.
Installation & the process
Do you use subcontractors?
Never. Every roof is installed by our own in-house crews. We're family-owned and owner-operated with 18+ years of experience — the people who inspect and quote your roof are the same people who tear it off and build the new one. This is the single biggest difference between us and the storm-chaser outfits that subcontract to whoever's cheapest.
How long does a roof replacement take?
Most residential roofs are torn off and dried-in the same day, with the full replacement finished in one to two days depending on size, pitch, and weather. Larger or steeper roofs, or ones needing significant decking repair, can take longer — we'll give you a realistic timeline up front.
Do you tear the old roof off, or roof over it?
We tear off to the deck. Roofing over an old layer hides rotten decking and bad flashing, adds weight, shortens the new roof's life, and can void the manufacturer warranty. Once the old roof is off, we inspect every sheet of decking and replace what's soft before anything new goes down.
What happens to my yard and landscaping during the job?
We protect the property before we start and clean up at the end of each day. Old shingles and debris go straight into our dump trailer, and we finish by running a magnetic roller across the yard and driveway to pick up stray nails — one of the most important last steps a lot of crews skip.
Do I need to be home during the installation?
It helps to connect at the start so we're aligned on details, but you don't have to be home for the whole job. Most of the work happens outside, and we'll keep you updated. See our Process page for the full step-by-step.
Financing & pricing
Do you offer financing?
Yes. We partner with Service Finance and Foundation Finance to offer flexible plans on qualifying projects — you can apply online through either lender from our estimate page. It's a straightforward way to move on a roof that can't wait without paying the whole cost up front.
How much does a new roof cost?
It depends on the size and pitch of the roof, the material you choose, how much decking needs replacing, and the complexity of the roofline. Rather than guess, we get on the roof, measure it, and hand you a clear, itemized quote. If it's an approved insurance claim, your cost is your deductible.
Is your quote fixed, or will the price change mid-job?
The quote we write down is the price. The one honest exception is decking: we can't always see rotten decking until the old roof is off, so any decking replacement is quoted at a clear per-sheet rate up front — you know that number before we ever start, with no surprise add-ons after.
Is the free inspection and estimate really free?
Yes — the inspection and the written estimate are free, with no obligation and no pressure. You keep the inspection photos either way.
